Adams Time Chart: the free Searchable Digital Edition of the 1881 Synchronological Chart
In 1871, Sebastian C. Adams published the Synchronological Chart of Universal History, later sold as Adams' Synchronological Chart or Map of History — twenty-three feet of paper that compress world history from the Creation to the late nineteenth century into a single continuous visual timeline. It was revised in 1881 and became one of the most widely distributed history charts in America.
This free online edition lets you explore the entire chart in high resolution on any device, with nothing to download or install. You can search its 13,000+ transcribed entries by name, date, nation, or event, and zoom directly to any point on the timeline. It is free to use, carries no advertising, and is maintained independently by Heritage Chronology Press.

Transcribing and verifying more than 13,000 entries, and serving a 50,000-pixel image to every visitor, takes a great deal of time and has real ongoing costs. There is no paywall and no advertising here: this project is sustained by the people who use it.

It is a chronological chart of world and biblical history created by Sebastian C. Adams: a single illustrated timeline more than 23 feet long, running from 4004 B.C. to the late nineteenth century, on which every nation flows side by side. It was first published in 1871 and revised up to the 1881 edition shown here.
Adams followed Archbishop James Ussher's biblical chronology, the standard reference of his day, and drew on historians such as Josephus, Rawlinson and Haydn's Dictionary of Dates. Modern historians date some ancient events differently, so the chart is best read as a remarkable nineteenth-century view of world and biblical history.
