When Was Noah’s Flood? Eight Dates on Adams’ Chart

Sebastian C. Adams’ chart prints the Flood at 2348 B.C. and, under “Different Dates Assigned:”, a list of eight dates, each with a label. Here they are, side by side, with the King James text.

In short: Adams’ chart dates the Flood to 2348 B.C., the year of the world 1656. The same list prints seven other dates: 2288, 2352, 2482, 2998, 3146, 3155 and 3246 B.C.

The eight dates on the chart

Adams prints the list with dotted leaders and repeated “B.C.” marks. The labels are his own words:

Adams’ labelB.C.
“USHER AND ENG.BIBLE”2348
“HEBREW BIBLE”2288
“PLAYFAIR”2352
“CLINTON”2482
“SAMARITAN PENT.”2998
“JOSEPHUS”3146
“DR.HALES”3155
“SEPTUAGINT”3246

The same eight names and dates also occur in Haydn’s table, which contains more entries and which Haydn introduces as epochs according to Dr. Hales: Jackson 3170, Persian 3103, Hindoo 3102, Howard 2698, Marsham 2344, Petavius 2329, Strauchius 2293 and Vulgar Jewish 2104. The dates are listed here as printed, side by side.

How 2348 B.C. is reached

Genesis 7:6 gives Noah’s age at the Flood:

6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
Genesis 7:6, King James Version

Adams’ chart prints the Flood as “DELUGE,1656. A.M. AND 2348 B.C.” Calculation: with the creation at 4004 B.C., 4004 − 1656 = 2348; and Noah born in the year of the world 1056, 1056 + 600 = 1656.

The days of the Flood

Genesis gives the beginning of the Flood and the resting of the ark:

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Genesis 7:11, King James Version
4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
Genesis 8:4, King James Version

Adams prints: “Noah and Family were in the ark 1 year and 10 days. Entered 2348.B.C. Left 2347.B.C.”

Haydn’s opening paragraph on the Deluge supplies a dated sequence: the warning in the year of the world 1536, the beginning on December 7 in 1656, the resting on May 6 in 1657, and Noah’s departure on December 18. The same paragraph gives a duration of 377 days.
